French (?) drawing of a Bearded Man

Who Is the Artist (Attribution)?

Curator’s Comments

This drawing of a bearded man in profile has not been exhibited or closely studied since it entered the collection through the bequest of Dan Fellows Platt and was accessioned in 1948. Currently it is classified as French 18th century. It appears to be a counter-proof that has been further worked up in red and black chalk, as well as graphite. Two collectors' stamps are visible on the mount: Dr. Max A. Goldstein (Lugt 2824), and an unidentified "GgH" stamp that is not currently in Lugt. Any suggestions, or possible comparatives, would be greatly appreciated.

    ‘It’s not a drawing. It’s a counter proof!’
